Georgetown School Board recognizes students for school citizenship

GEORGETOWN, Texas — Four Georgetown high school students were recognized at this week’s School Board meeting for their citizenship activities, named as “Jack Frost Citizens of the Month.”

  • Certificates were given to Vanessa Calzada and Brooke Perry from East View High School.
  • From Georgetown High School, Grace Kearney and Alex Brent were also honored as Citizens of the Month.

Calzada has served on Student Council for three years, including as secretary and treasurer. For three years, she has also was involved with UIL Academics and volunteered as secretary. Other activities include Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society), National Honor Society, and served as head librarian for the school orchestra. She is also active in her church and plans to pursue a degree in Finance in college, with hopes to become a Chief Financial Officer in her adult career.

Perry has been a member of East View Choir for all four years of high school, service as vice president, librarian, assistant section leader and sight-reading section leader. She has also been a member in GLEE! Show Choir her junior and senior years. She is on the Cheer Team, East View Volleyball team, has been in Spanish Club, and PALs, National Honor Society for three years. In the community, she has spent time helping with Meals on Wheels and mentored at Main Street Baptist Church Preschool classes. She plans to major in nutritional sciences and become a physician assistant.

Kearney has been a member of the Girls’ Track and Basketball teams, National Honor Society, Student Equity Group, and HUSA. Community activities include Young Life, Campaigners and a church youth group. She plans to attend college and study Kinesiology.

Brent has been a member of the Football and Baseballs teams for four years, in the PALS program serving as a mentor for two years, in the Rocketry program for two years, and served as an Upperclass Ambassador for two years. His community activities include participating in Junior Leadership Georgetown, served as a baseball buddy to Special Needs students in the Challenger Games, volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club and as a Locker Volunteer. He plans to attend Texas A&M University.

Cross Country Team

runnerIn addition, the School Board recognized the Georgetown High School Lady Eagle Cross Country team for qualifying for the University Interscholastic League state cross country meet for the second consecutive year. The state meet was held  in Round Rock at the end on November 23 and 24 at Old Settlers’ Park at Palm Valley, 3300 Palm Valley Blvd.

Members of the Cross Country team include McKenzie Bailey, Avery Hill, Dennie Decker, Ava Sieckmann, Jacqui Spencer, Sam Folsom and Emily Morales.

Citizen Advisory Committee

In other actions, the School Board members created a Citizens Advisory Committee which will be tasked with review and assessment of facilities and projects for consideration in a future bond. The new CAC will begin to meet from February to June. A community survey would next be conducted in the summer, and any recommendations developed from the research is to be presented at a meeting in July 2021.

The deadline for the School Board to call for a bond election is August 2021. Information on nominations for the committee will be made public at a later date.
