CEDAR PARK, Texas — This week marks 40 years since the Cedar Park Library opened its doors to the public. According to city staff, the library first opened at the Cedar Park Plaza Shopping Center in 1981 and moved to a remodeled laundromat later in the year. The library moved to its current location in 1990 and expanded in 2001 from 7,300 square feet to 25,500 square feet.
A new library is planned for the future to be located in the Bell Boulevard Redevelopment Project. It will be about 40,000 square feet, which is 57 percent larger than the current library. It will also have a large outdoor area for special events. The funds to build were approved by Cedar Park City Council in December 2020 when it authorized a $3.11 million design agreement with Lake Flato Architects Inc. The voters approved a bond proposal to fund a new library in 2015.
The 40th year anniversary of the existing library will be celebrated with a few events:
- Jan. 25: birthday storytime and launch of The Battle of the Books
- Jan. 26: virtual escape room
