Nadine Johnson Elementary receives TEA Purple Star Campus designation

HUTTO, Texas — The Texas Education Agency updated its listings and announced that Nadine Johnson Elementary School has earned a Purple Star Campus designation. This means that the school has met the criteria for the 2020-2021 school year in demonstrating support and commitment to meeting the unique needs of military families and their students.

Principal at NJES is Bridgit Reichel, and Assistant Principal is Kathleen Navickas. The school has an enrollment of 531 students. It is located at 480 Carl Stern Drive.

This award was created by the 86th Texas Legislature via SB 1557. The bill was passed in May 2019.

It includes having to:

  1. Designate a campus-based military liaison.
  2. Create and maintain an easily accessible web page that includes information on military-connected students and their families.
  3. Must have a campus transition program.
  4. Offer at least one of the following initiatives:
    – A resolution showing support for military-connected students and families,
    – Participation in Month of the Military Child or Military Family Month, or
    – Partnership with a school liaison officer to encourage and provide opportunities for active-duty military members.

Campuses that satisfy the criteria and are awarded the Purple Star Campus Designation are eligible to recertify the designation every two school years.
