Sand Volleyball

ROUND ROCK, Texas – As the weather in Central Texas begins to cool later this month, residents can take advantage of joining free Sand Volleyball Leagues which begin on October 27, 2020. Four-person and six-person co-ed teams will play for eight weeks in a leisure format.

All games are to be self-officiated and teams must have a complete roster in order to register. Games will be played at Old Settlers Park, 3300 E. Palm Valley Blvd., on the sand volleyball courts. All teams are asked to be sure they are available on each scheduled day for their league.

Teams with four members will play on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. beginning October 27 through December 15.

Teams with six members will play on Thursday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. from October 29 to December 17.

The courts will be closed on October 14 and October 15 for installation of new LED lights.

Sand Volleyball has been an Olympic sport since the 1996 Summer Olympics, and likely originated in 1915 on Waikiki beach in Hawaii.

“The team has three hits for returning the ball (including the block touch). In Beach Volleyball, the team winning a rally scores a point. When the receiving team wins a rally, it gains a point and the right to serve. The serving player must be alternated every time this occurs,” according to the International Volleyball Federation.

Beach Volleyball as a sport used to be governed by the International Amateur Handball Federation before the International Volleyball Federation was founded in Paris, France in 1947. The FIVD is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland.
