PFLUGERVILLE, Texas — Each election year, we find more states approve the sale of recreational marijuana. While that has yet to occur in Texas, a derivative of the plant has been legally available as a product for medicinal purposes. “CBD” — which stands for cannabinoids — is a natural compound produced by the hemp plant, and when blended into a salve, oil, capsules, edible items or other forms, it has shown to help alleviate pain. There are also products available for pets who might be suffering from pain from arthritis and other ailments. Endocannabinoids is something our bodies produce naturally, and CBD is a form of such.
Growing hemp in Texas was legalized by the 86th Texas Legislature in June 2019 via House bill 1325, which became effective immediately. With HB 3703, passed also in June 2019, additional medical needs were recognized and permit the use of CBD products to help manage symptoms. In the original bill, hemp is defined as “the plant Cannabis sativa L., and any part of that plant, including the seeds of the plant and all derivatives…with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.”
Here and there around Central Texas, feather flags and billboards tout where a customer can purchase CBD products. In some instances, pharmacies carry the items, as do health stores. CBD has had the element which causes the user to get “high” or euphoric removed. Thus, CBD does not cause such a reaction in the user as THC in marijuana can.
With more stress and sleep disturbances, some do turn to these type of products which do not require a doctor’s prescription, since they are sold over-the-counter.
A quick Google search of where to purchase CBD from north Austin to Georgetown shows a minimum of 18 locations. Various vendors also sell from online websites, who will obtain the product from a wholesale company and have local vendors, such as Dr. D. CBD. This company’s products also include items for sleep and “male enhancement.” Such wholesale vendors will get local stores to carry their products and the store earns a percentage on the mark-up.
Dr. D. CBD was founded by Dr. Don Davidson, a medical doctor, who says, “The endocannabinoid system is one of the greatest discoveries in modern medicine and the cannabis plant will go down in history as the most medically useful plant humans have discovered.”
In Pflugerville, High Society Relief located at 15424 Farm to Market Road 1825, #110, sells a variety of products, including hemp flower coffee, a medium roast, among an offering five types of coffee. The business has been open for one year, though when the pandemic hit, HSR had to close its doors temporarily. Owners are Tyrone and Shakana Howard. The business does delivery to customers, as well. Products include bath bombs, muscle and joint cream, gummies, sleep products and more.
Another CBD seller in Pflugerville is CBD American Shaman, a veteran-owned business. It is located at 200 E. Pecan St., Suite 4 near El Rincon and the Three Legged Goat. They also have four locations in Austin. The company’s website states its proprietary nanotechnology “gives unmatched particle size, putting cannabinoids in their most bio-active state. This minute size gives the cannabinoids a much greater surface area.” This store also carries a variety of products with CBD in them, such as topicals, gummies, help oil, tea, candy and more.
