ROUND ROCK, Texas — In an annual competition that takes place among city government maintenance teams, Round Rock took first place at the State Maintenance Rodeo held at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. in Temple, Texas, city officials announced. Round Rock’s team competed against those from nine other cities, with a total of 18 groups competing.
The Texas Recreation and Parks Society (TRAPS), a nonprofit organization, was founded in 1937 and members work together to advance the parks, recreation and leisure professions in the state.
Cedar Park had six teams in the event. Pflugerville entered two teams, as did Temple and Round Rock. Belton, Georgetown, Kyle, New Braunfels and Williamson County each had one team competing.
Events that make up this “rodeo” competition involve performing tasks using equipment that the Maintenance Crews use in their everyday jobs: Backhoe, Backpack Blower, Irrigation, Mower, Nail Drive, Truck/Trailer, Plant ID.
Round Rock’s Team #1 led with a score of 23 points, with the second place finisher, Georgetown, earning 16 points. The next closest score was a total of eight, earned by Cedar Park’s Team #2 and Temple’s Team #1. Each team has just two members in the Truck and Trailer Competition and Irrigation Assembly contests. The remaining contests have just one person, and each individual may compete in two different events. The top five teams that competed at the regional rodeos were eligible to participate in the State of Texas event.
TRAPS also gives awards for projects in regions throughout the state in Arts & Humanities, Conservation, Department Marketing, Lone Star Programming, Maintenance Employee, Part-Time Employee, Professional of the Year, and Young Professional categories. This year’s awards will be presented between November 16 and November 24.
