Leander seeks applicants for Economic Development Committee

LEANDER, Texas — Residents of Leander are encouraged to apply for open board positions on the Economic Development Committee. Others who are eligible to apply are people who own businesses in Leander but may live elsewhere. Members are appointed by City Council once applications are received. All applicants must be registered voters, according to City Ordinance No. 20-088-00, which was updated December 3, 2020.

Business meetingThe committee of volunteers serve as an advisory group, but does not make decisions about development projects, incentives or administration. The group meets at least once per quarter, or more as needed. At least seven people but not more than 15 make up the committed, which also includes on City  Council liaison and one City of Leander staff person.

City  Council looks to appoint those persons who have knowledge in any of the following sectors:

  • Education
  • Real estate
  • Industrial
  • Technology
  • Nonprofit organizations
  • Retail
  • Banking
  • Utilities

Some of the commission’s duties include:

  • Work with staff to obtain grants
  • Support, promote, encourage projects that add to the city’s tax base to affect positively the local economy
  • Encourage new businesses to locate in the city
  • Recommend creation of presentations which promote local business opportunities
  • Regularly report to the Mayor and City Council
