ROUND ROCK, Texas — Round Rock Independent School District (RRISD) has announced that its Counseling Services Coordinator Dr. LaShanda Lewis has been named Director of Advocacy for the Lone Star State School Counselor Association (LSSSCA). In this role, she will be able to serve students and school counselors across Texas in the 2021 legislative session.
She was elected to the position by school counselors in Texas to serve in the role for one year, beginning February 2021. In preparation, she has started to meet with LSSCA Board members.
“I am honored to be elected as the LSSSCA Directory of Advocacy. School counselors are an integral part of the school system as they work to support the holistic wellness of all students,” Lewis said in a statement posted on the RRISD website. “As the newly elected Director for our State organization, I hope to continue to work with local and state education groups and lawmakers to define the role of further and provide support for school counselors not only in Round Rock ISD but across Texas.
“We know that students learn best when all their needs are met,” Lewis continued. “If campuses have the appropriate number of school counselors and the school counselors are able to work directly with students to nurture and foster growth, students will be better able to excel not only academically but socially and emotionally as well.”
LSSSCA has also recognized two schools in RRISD with “Bronze Awards” for having the best school counseling programs: Canyon Vista Middle School and Cedar Ridge High School.
