GEORGETOWN, Texas — More than 1,700 flags are on display in honor of Veterans Day in Georgetown in its Field of Honor, hosted by the Rotary Club of Georgetown. This is the fourth year in a row where San Gabriel Park Activity Field, located at 445 E. Morrow St., has been the site of the flag display in honor of military members, police officers, firefighters and first responders. Traditionally, Veterans Day is meant to honor those who have served their country in one of the branches of the military.
The flags will be in place from Saturday, November 7 through Sunday, November 15. On opening night, an outdoor concert with Wynn Williams will take place. Face masks are required to be worn at the Field of Honor.
The public is invited to place 3-foot by 5-foot flags in honor of loved ones who are serving our country or to honor those who have been helping care for person infected with the coronavirus as front-line workers. The site is free to visit, however, flags are priced at a cost of forty dollars and can be bought on site. Last year, Rotary Club raised $42,000 via the event. Proceeds will be given to various programs, such as the Samaritan Center to help those with COVID-19, to Right on Center for Kids and Veteran Outdoors, both of which offer equestrian therapy programs for veterans. Some of the money will also be given to The Resiliency Program to assist veterans who have Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome.
Volunteers may assist with duties at the Field of Honor, such as processing flag orders, data entry, greet attendees, make dedication tags, inspect the flags, serve as a docent, and answer questions about the field. Register online at the Rotary Club’s website. Volunteers may also join the Facebook group set up for this event. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.
